Los Angeles

By Anna Lynn Sibal

Going on a holiday to the City of Los Angeles always includes a day of just lazing about at the beach. If you are planning a holiday to Los Angeles and yet do not have the beach on your itinerary, you are better off shelving the trip or going somewhere else. It is totally unheard of to go on a holiday in the City of Angels and not hit the beach.

Anyone who grew up watching “Baywatch” on TV would know just how gorgeous the beaches of Los Angeles are. Of course, the beauty of the beaches of Los Angeles extends to more than the bikini-clad bods of the women swimming and sunbathing there. The powdery sand and the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean are more than enough to satisfy the beach urge.

Aside from swimming and sunbathing (and ogling), you can go and play beach volleyball on the beaches of Los Angeles. You can also go surfing, jet skiing and do other water sports on the beach. The best times to go to Los Angeles if your mind is focused on the beach are the months of March and April or in the months of September and October. At these times, the skies over Los Angeles are a lot clearer and a bit more free from the smog that plagues the city on the other months of the year.

As much as the beach should be the first temple you go to worship in when you visit Los Angeles, there are other temples that you should be trekking to when you are in the city. One of these temples in Los Angeles that you will certainly pay your respects to is none other than the studios of Hollywood. You can go as star-crazy as you want when you go on a holiday in Los Angeles; Hollywood is here, after all. Take a tour of the Universal Studios and see the old sets and the back lots. Or you can go take a walk in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Better yet, go to downtown Los Angeles at night and go clubbing. You are sure to bump into at least one star.

If you get tired of lazing about the beach and star-hunting, spend a few hours just watching people at the boardwalk along Venice Beach. You will meet all kinds of people there, and watching these people will give you a deeper understanding of how it is to be a citizen of Los Angeles.

An alternative to watching people at the boardwalk is to go on a jaunt about the museums. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is home to more than 100,000 pieces of art from all over the world, definitely one of the largest collections in the United States. Yet another amazing museum that you should not miss is the J. Paul Getty Center, where works by the masters are on display.

As for shopping, there are a lot of boutiques all over Los Angeles, selling almost anything. But for a unique shopping experience, there are two places you should go to: the Farmer’s Market and Melrose Avenue.

The sprawling city of Los Angeles is worth visiting for the beaches. But there is more to the city than just its beaches.
