Best Beaches in the Bahamas
By Valerie Mellema
The Bahamas is a collection of over 700 islands that are located just 100 miles east of Florida. One of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, the Bahamas is rich in culture and history. The kind of experience you wish to have will determine which island(s) you should select to visit.
Like most islands in the Caribbean region, the temperature doesn’t vary much, although there are seasons when rain and hurricanes are more frequent. The high season for the Bahamas is from December to April and when you will find the most events and the largest crowds. Although there will be large crowds of visitors during the high tourist season, you can still find room to relax on the beach. Here are just a few of the best beaches in the Bahamas:
Cable Beach: Located on New Providence Island, this glittering shoreline of Cable Beach runs about 4 miles and close to shops, casinos, restaurants, and bars.
Cabbage Beach: Located on Paradise Island, this beach is like Las Vegas in the Caribbean. This 2 mile stretch of beach can be crowded near the mega-hotels, but you can find a little solitude toward the northwestern edge.
Xanadu Beach: Located on Grand Bahama Island, this shoreline stretches for almost 60 miles and tends to be one of the most crowded beaches, but remains a popular spot.
Pink Sands Beach: Located on Harbour Island, this beach runs the entire length of the island's eastern side. The sand is literally pale pink and offers calm waters to lounge in.
There is some controversy over private and public beach access and the government has been trying to make all beaches as accessible as possible for visitors, while respecting beachfront locations of hotels and resorts. Your hotel concierge can provide the latest information on beach access.
For romantic getaways, you have the option of choosing from couples-only resorts that provide a casual and secluded atmosphere. No children and poolside drink service can make for a truly relaxing vacation.
The Bahamas also makes a great destination wedding location. You can find event planners and wedding coordinating services all over the island to make this an event to remember. Wedding packages can be designed to be all-inclusive or customized for your needs.
