Belize Rustic Tropical Beauty
By Valerie Mellema
Just south of the Yucatan peninsula and east of Guatemala, South America lies the beautiful area of Belize. This area is rich in history and culture with archaeologists finding evidence of Mayan civilizations dating back to 250 A.D. to 900 A.D.
Following the ancient civilizations of Belize, several European explorers followed and a struggle for power began. Belize is a melting pot of multiple cultures including Africa, Spain, Britain, China, East India, as well as many others. Belize was controlled by the British until September 21, 1981, but the region has been highly influenced by U.S. culture.
Belize offers warm weather year round, with only a minimum of rain in the northern portion of the region. During the winter season months of June through November, the temperature is warm, but there is frequent rain. Outdoor nature explorers should plan on packing a poncho for the frequent afternoon showers.
Summer in Belize is much drier, but also much hotter. Expect your typical tropical days with high temperatures and humidity. The high tourist season coincides with the drier months of December through February, while the least crowded and most affordable prices can be found between September and November.
Belize offers very nice mainland beaches like Dangriga, Placencia and Punta Gorda and hundreds of off-shore beaches. Popular spots such as Chetumal Bay, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker offer endless snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. Ambergris Caye has numerous dive shops where you can rent equipment and take lessons before going on an underwater adventure. The beaches are beautiful and rustic, which is the very thing that most find so charming about this area.
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can take multi-day off-shore boat trips. There are several trips to choose from and explore the area’s unspoiled and remote coves and islands. The Hol Chan Channel is a must see underwater exploration along with the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Accommodations in Belize span from affordable to 5-Star resorts. For outdoor enthusiasts, Belize offers off the beaten path eco-friendly campgrounds where you can sleep in tents. However, those looking for pampering and luxury can reserve a suite in one of the 5-Star resorts in the region. Most hotels will run between $50 and $200 per night, depending on where you stay and the amenities available.
